The fed-batch growth model is defined by Equations (14) to (18), (24) and (25) in Additional file 1, and the perfusion growth model by equations (14) to (18) and (25) to (27) in Additional file 1. The diffusivity D = 6.5 × 10−11 m2/second, the initial conditions for the growth model are defined in Equation (30), and the parameters are presented in Table 2.
