Comparison of real-time PCR analysis for collagen type II (Col2) expression of aggregates from human meniscal cells (black) (10 pellets at each time point of each donor (n = 14)) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs; gray) (eight pellets at each time point of each donor (n = 6)) after 21 days of culture in chondrogenic media. At day 21, MSCs showed a significantly higher relative gene expression and collagen type II upregulation compared to meniscal cells derived from non-refixable meniscal tears. *P < 0.005
