Spleen-derived mononuclear cells (MNCs) differentiate into cells with the characteristics of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in vitro. a–d Cells double-labeled for DiI-labeled acetylated low-density lipoprotein (DiI-ac-LDL; red) and fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-lectin binding (green) were identified as EPCs (yellow). Cell nuclei were stained with DAPI (blue). e, f Adherent MNCs were analyzed for expression of CD34 and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2), respectively, by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS).
