The immunomodulatory effects of MSCs in kidney transplantation. MSCs can interact with various immune cells and affect their functions. For example, MSCs can inhibit the maturation and allostimulatory function of DCs and hamper the proliferation and cytotoxicity of T cells. In addition, impaired proliferation and maturation of B cells can also be observed after incubation with MSCs. Macrophages experience a switch towards the M2 phenotype when cocultured with MSCs
