Candidate genes for a refined MSC lineage gene profile. Twenty-four genes previously determined to be specific to the MSC lineage are reliably expressed in both a serially expanded UC-MSCs and b cytokine-licensed UC and BM-MSCs. ADAMTS5 is undetected in multiple samples in each data set and is not suitable as an enduring marker gene. Genes in bold are upregulated in MSCs versus fibroblasts [2, 16]. Italicized genes are positive (+) and negative (−) controls, the latter of which have involvement in genetic disease
