Funnel plot. The observed data are represented by hollow circles and diamonds. The large studies are at the top of the figure and are indeed broadly evenly distributed on either side of the observed effect. Small studies are at the bottom of the figure and do seem to be biased towards very large effect sizes, suggesting possible bias. The filled-in circles and diamonds represent replacing the hypothetical ‘missing’ studies to see how the effect changes. The effect size drops but does not disappear, suggesting publication bias exaggerates effect size though does not explain the effect entirely
