Static lung elastance on days 1, 3 and 7. Mice received Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) intraperitoneally or were subjected to cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). The control group for LPS received saline intraperitoneally, whereas a sham- operated group was used as control for animals undergoing CLP. At day 1, some animals were sacrificed, post acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), in order to evaluate the static lung elastance (Est,L), while other animals were randomized and received saline (SAL) or bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (BMDMC, 2×106 cells) intravenously. Values expressed as mean ± standard deviation of six animals in each group. *Significantly different from the corresponding control group (C or sham) (P <0.05). #ARDS-BMDMC vs. ARDS-SAL (P <0.05).
