The use of pluripotent stem cells for engineering neural tissue. The diagram compares the derivation of embryonic stem cell lines from the inner cell mass of the blastocyst and how induced pluripotent stem cells are derived from somatic cells by induction of the Yamanaka factors. These pluripotent stem cells can then be directed to differentiate into the three main cell types found in the central nervous system (neurons, oligodendrocytes, and astrocytes).
