hMSCs upregulate expression of anti-inflammatory genes in response to LPS-treated lung. Twelve hours after delivery of 5 × 105 hMSCs to LPS- or PBS-exposed lungs, total RNA was isolated from lungs and analyzed by quantitative RT-PCR for mRNA expression of (a) human TNFAIP6, (b) human KGF, or (c) human IL1RN. Values represent fold increase over values obtained for LPS + hMSCs in vitro mix. Data are shown as the mean ± SEM (n = 3 per group). * P < 0.01 versus PBS + hMSCs; † P < 0.05 compared with PBS + PBS; and ‡ P < 0.05 compared with LPS + PBS.
