Under oblique bright-field microscopy, the matrix rich core of the culture appeared as a yellow field. Under epifluorescence microscopy, Live/Dead™ staining of the same cultures revealed that most of the cells were alive (Calcein: green), with very few dead cells present (Et-HD: red).
